Pressure Mounts in Venezuela for Full Release of Political Prisoners After Limited Recent Frees
A new call has emerged for the release of hundreds of political prisoners in Venezuela after a number of recent, but small, releases. According to the human rights organization Foro Penal, while 444 prisoners have been released, many more remain in jail, causing relatives to start hunger strikes outside prisons such as Zona 7 in Caracas. While government leaders had indicated earlier that a “goodwill gesture” towards peace was forthcoming, activists and opposition leaders are now condemning the process for its lack of transparency. They say that while some prisoners have been released, they are not really free, due to gag orders and the immediate re-arrest or house arrest of leaders such as politician Juan Pablo Guanipa.
